Data, the New Black Gold explores how citizens could take ownership of the data generated from their cities to prevent exploitation. On a site visit to Lagos - Nigeria and Freetown - Sierra Leone, documentation is taken in the most populated streets and markets of the city. The concept of citizen controlled data collection, is illustrated in a series of informal mobile devices called Area Snap. Using data from the Area Snap devices a digital city is collect- ed, formed, stored, multiplied, valued and owned by citizens. These devices stage the in-between space of the physical reality and digital reality. The Area Snap devices collect data at three view points;
1) Ground view - Luk-grnod-man omolanke (detective wheelbarrow) 2) Eye view - Waka turnturn (walking and spinning)
3) Bird-eye view - Airforce 1 (flying witch)
